Brighton has the feel of a small lake town and the pace of a growing Livingston County hub. Around the Mill Pond and Main Street downtown you’ll find century-old homes and storefronts. Out in Brighton Township and along the chain of lakes, there are walkout ranches, modern farmhouses and custom builds on rolling, wooded lots. Stone and brick suit this landscape, and they have to be built to handle its hills, lakes and long winters.
Next Level Custom Brick is a family-owned masonry company with more than 15 years of experience across Southeast Michigan. For Brighton homeowners we build retaining and garden walls, stone veneer entries and walkout facades, brick and stone porches, outdoor fireplaces and chimneys. We also repair the masonry that’s already there.
Masonry Services for Brighton Homes
Brighton projects often involve grade changes, lake exposure or a mix of old and new construction. These are the services we provide most:
Retaining Walls, Garden Walls & Hardscape Masonry
Sloped lots around Brighton’s lakes and in the township often need walls that hold soil and look good doing it. We build stone and brick garden walls, terraced planters, seat walls and steps with proper footings and drainage behind the wall.
Stone Veneer for Walkouts, Entries & Fireplaces
Walkout basements leave a lot of exposed foundation on the back of the house. Cultured stone or natural thin stone turns that wall into a feature. We also install stone on front entries, columns, chimneys and interior fireplaces.
Porch, Stoop & Step Rebuilds
From older homes near downtown to 1990s builds in the subdivisions, we repair or rebuild brick porches and steps that have settled, cracked or pulled away from the house.
Chimney Repair, Crowns & Rebuilds
Wood-burning fireplaces are popular here, and they put chimneys to work. We rebuild crowns, replace spalled brick, tuckpoint, and rebuild chimneys above the roofline when needed.
Brick Repair & Tuckpointing
We repoint worn mortar, replace damaged brick and repair cracks on homes and small commercial buildings, matching the original look as closely as possible.
Serving Brighton and the Surrounding Lake Communities
Our crews work throughout the City of Brighton, Brighton Township and the neighboring townships that share the Brighton address.
Downtown Brighton & the Mill Pond
The streets around the Mill Pond, the Tridge and Main Street hold some of the oldest homes in Livingston County. Older brick and stone need soft, compatible mortar and careful repointing. Modern hard mortar can damage historic brick, so we take extra care on these homes.
Brighton Township Lake Homes
Lakefront and lake-access homes in Brighton Township see constant moisture, ice and wind off the water. Patios, steps and walls near the shoreline need dense materials, good drainage and solid footings, and that’s how we build them.
Subdivisions off Grand River, Old US-23 & Hacker Road
Many neighborhoods built from the 1980s through the 2000s now need chimney crowns, porch repair or a refreshed front elevation. Stone veneer on the garage and entry is one of the most popular upgrades we install.
Near Brighton & Island Lake Recreation Areas
Wooded, rolling lots near the state recreation areas suit natural-looking stone walls, fire features and stepped walkways that work with the grade instead of fighting it.

Building Masonry for Brighton’s Hills, Lakes and Winters
Brighton sits in glacial country: kettle lakes, hills and a mix of sandy and clay soils that can change from one end of a yard to the other. A wall or porch that looks fine the first summer can heave or lean after a few winters if the base isn’t right. We dig to stable soil, compact gravel bases, add drainage behind retaining walls, and set footings below the frost line where the design calls for it.
Livingston County winters are long and wet, and freeze-thaw cycles are hard on brick, stone and mortar. We use materials rated for exterior exposure, tool mortar joints to shed water, and install caps and crowns that overhang and drip so water can’t soak into the masonry below.

Brighton Masonry FAQs
Do you travel to Brighton from Garden City?
Yes. Brighton and the surrounding Livingston County townships are part of our regular service area. We schedule estimates Monday through Saturday.
Can you build a retaining wall on a steep lake lot?
Yes. Taller or tiered walls need careful design, drainage and sometimes engineering. We’ll assess the grade, soil and water on site and recommend the right wall system, whether natural stone, segmental block or brick.
Should I use real stone or cultured stone on my walkout?
Both look great. Manufactured cultured stone is lighter and usually lower in cost. Natural thin stone has more variation and a longer track record outdoors. We’ll show you samples of both and explain the trade-offs for your wall.
My older downtown Brighton home has crumbling mortar. Can it be fixed?
Usually, yes. We rake out the failing joints and repoint with a mortar that’s compatible with the original brick, often a softer lime-based mix, so the repair protects the brick instead of damaging it.
